So, I’ve been wasting too much time with Pokémon recently (namely in custom Pokémon Online server for Pokémon Universe), and my friend and I were talking about have mono type teams (Like the gym leaders), and on a whim I chose water because of how well my Ludicolo was preforming in battle. I spent some time tweaking it and this may not be the final version, but I’m satisfied with how’s it’s playing it enough to consider it “finished.”

Skwug Game Review

Ever wish you could disappear? How about just teleportation? In the Xbox Live Indie Game Skwug you play as a blue, big-eyed round goop, presumably named “Skwug”, that possesses the ability to teleport a short distance through and over obstacles in this platform puzzler. With outstanding gameplay, design, simplistic graphics and music Skwug keeps you wanting to finish “just one more” level.

Primarily, this game struck me by surprise with how simple its concept is to grasp, and then by applying this into clever puzzles. With three controls, “A” to jump, “B” to teleport, and the Right Thumb Stick to move, you guide Skwug through laser beams, lava falls, and over spikes to the end of each level. Most levels are horizontal in nature and often offer some new trick or feature the previous didn’t.

Of course there are pros and cons that can be drawn from playing through to the finish.
Skwug remains in a balanced position in game length, staying “just long enough” like other great puzzlers such as LIMBO or Portal. Consistently teaching the player new things, even to the last level. The game supports two levels of difficulty: “Easy” and “Hard”. The only changes in Hard are the removal of checkpoints and the addition of an extra collectable titled the Hypercube, and after the first few courses I played Hard exclusively. More often than not, gathering the Hypercube can make a level much more difficult than it was originally. There were several occasions in which a “Restart Level” was available, such as hitting the Back button or as an option in the Start Menu. This would be very useful when trying to beat a level in par time. Another controller related con is where after death the player can instantly teleport as a result of a antemortem ‘port command, while this normally doesn’t lead to death, it isn’t very pleasant. If a level editor was in this game I would have a hard time not playing this game. A very delightful nugget of brilliance in Skwug is the inclusion of “Unlocks”, or this Indie Game’s variant of Achievements. This is something I wish more indie games would include, as they just make playing the game feel that much more rewarding.

In Skwug there are 5 different worlds, or lands rather, with own music and textures. And while the textures are simple, to a near generic degree, this keeps the player focused on problem solving and overall is not an issue. Each song is entertaining, for sometime, but after playing a particularly hard course the song can be agitating. If the last level had it’s own unique song I would have liked this.

Often times I purchase a downloadable game, and don’t bother to finish it, but Skwug was special and deserved being talked about, even if it came out in ‘09! For 60 Microsoft Points I highly recommend this indie title, of course after playing a free trial if you’re not entirely convinced this game’s as good as I say it is.

New lady friend

So for the past couple days I’ve been talking to my new friend Courtney, and it’s quite possible that there might be something more here. We’re going to meet up Friday to do something, we wanted to go to the park and just hang out but it’s going to be 85° so we might go skating or something indoors. We’ve only known each other for a couple days but we’ve made this list of cool things we want to do together, like eating Chinese, having a movie marathon, and going camping.
